Embodiment coaching
A space for what’s emergent
Embodiment coaching is a third space in my practice: neither personal training nor psychotherapy, and not necessarily organized around a particular goal or outcome.
Sometimes people find their way to me because they want to work together but aren't looking for a fitness practice or therapy. You might arrive with a question, an experience you want to explore, something happening in your body or life, or simply, “I don't know, this just seems interesting.” We can begin there.
What happens next can take many forms. We might talk, draw, walk, sit outside, work with imagery or active imagination, explore developmental movement patterns, lift something heavy, or do something neither of us anticipated when the session began. Sometimes I guide or facilitate; sometimes we explore together; sometimes you may be the one teaching me.
The practice isn't defined by what we do so much as how we orient to what is happening between us and what wants our attention.
You might be curious about:
Something happening in your body that’s difficult to describe
A transition or change in how you experience yourself
A dream, image, feeling, or experience that is reoccuring
Creative frustration or a desire to reconnect with play
Questions about meaning, identity, spirituality, or belonging
Something you don’t have words for yet.
“I started practicing somatics by myself and wanted someone in addition to my therapist to talk to who would understand what’s coming through. Beck’s kindness, support, and relational approach has been invaluable. ”
“After starting therapy, I started feeling my body again and it was really intense. I wanted to move with someone who could help me make sense of what was going on. ”
You may want to…
Feel more connected to your body or notice your embodied experience more often
Explore neurodivergent or other non-normative ways of being in and relating to the world
Bring something emerging in talk therapy, physical therapy, spiritual practice, or another part of your life into a different kind of space
Integrate an altered-state experience, including psychedelic journeys, breathwork, forest therapy, or sensory deprivation
Explore how identity, culture, power, or social location are experienced through the body
Develop a relationship with movement, imagination, creativity, nature, or play
Have somewhere to explore an experience without needing to decide beforehand what it means or where it should lead
“I’m getting ready for surgery and wanted to learn some new skills, so I can support myself as I heal.”
“I love to move, but I don’t like to work out. Beck is helping me find ways of moving that are fun. I can hike for an hour now without pain!”
How does it work?
Start by booking a free initial 30-minute virtual session. This is time for us to get to know each other a little and for you to ask me questions. (I’ll ask you some too!) If we decide to move forward, we’ll talk logistics (scheduling, frequency, location, etc.). If we’re not a fit, I can still help you determine your next step.
